Just like the name suggests, Fentora is an opioid agonist meant for buccal mucosal use. You use it by placing and retaining it within the buccal cavity for a period enough to allow the tablet to disintegrate and the fentanyl to be absorbed across the cheeks. Read to learn more about this drug.
What is Fentora?
It is an opioid agonist that contains fentanyl citrate as the main ingredient. It works by generating a reaction which releases carbon dioxide when the drug mixes with saliva. Fentanyl is a very lipophilic compound that is highly soluble in organic solvents and can be partly soluble in water.
All Fentora tablets are expressed as the fentanyl amount-free base. For instance, a 100 mg strength tablet comes with a 100 mcg fentanyl-free base.
The drug also has other inactive ingredients such as sodium bicarbonate, magnesium stearate, and more.
Fentora indications and uses
Fentora is indicated for use in managing breakthrough pain among cancer patients aged 18 years and above. The patients must already be receiving and should be tolerant to around-the-clock opioid therapy for their cancer pain.
To be considered opioid-tolerant, you have to be taking an opioid for 7days or longer. The opioid can be 60mg oral morphine each day, 25 mcg transdermal fentanyl, or 30 mg oral oxycodone each day.
Fentora use limitations
Fentora is not for use among patients who are not opioid-tolerant.
Fentora should not be used in the management of postoperative or acute pain which includes migraine/headache and dental pain.
Fentora is part of the TIRF REMS Access program and can be administered only to people who are enrolled in the program. The administration of Fentora is not allowed among inpatients.
